Posted on 12/22/2009

It’s time for your favorite Christmas traditions: getting the whole family in matching pajamas, overdosing on sugar cookies and returning your Christmas gifts for the stuff you really want. Wondering which retailers will give you cash-in-hand and which ones will stick you with a gift card? Here are store return policies from some of the hottest retailers, plus deals on last-minute gifts over at the Ultimate Coupons' Christmas Sales page for those of you still shopping.

Wal-Mart - At Wal-Mart, your satisfaction is guaranteed even when it comes to returns and exchanges. Everything in the store can be exchanged or refunded as long as you have a receipt and get it done within 90 days of purchase. There are some exceptions including a few electronic items. Sadly you won’t be able to exchange your shot gun—sales on guns and ammo are final.

Target - If Target’s return policy were a game, it would be Simon Says—if you don’t do exactly what they say you lose. You must have a receipt to get your money back and you’ll get the money in the same form as the original payment. If you’re returning a gift without a receipt you may be out of luck depending on how many returns you’ve already made this year. Also, some items will be subject to a 15% restocking fee including portable DVD players, digital cameras and camcorders.

Best Buy - Time is of the essence when it comes to returning items at Best Buy. You have just 14 days from the original purchase date to return computers, monitors, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, and radar detectors. All other items must go back within 30 days.

Sears - If you’re not satisfied with your Sears purchase, you’ve got 90 days to return it. Just make sure it’s in the original packaging. Some items have a 30 day deadline and you may get stuck with a restocking fee on certain electronics.

JC Penney - If you’ve got your receipt, JC Penney gives you 90 days to make a return. After that you are out of luck. No receipt? They’ll give you a store credit for the item’s lowest price within the last 30 days.

Toys “R” Us - Your receipt is your ticket to returns at Toys “R” Us. If you don’t have a receipt you are out of luck. According to the company’s website, Toys “R” Us will not accept returns or exchanges without an original receipt. If you’ve got the original receipt then you have 90 days to get the job done.

Barnes and Noble - You’ve only got two weeks from the purchase date to return an item to Barnes and Noble if you’re not satisfied. Everything must be in its original package and shrink wrapped items can’t be opened.
