William Feather once said, “A budget tells us what we can’t afford, but it doesn’t keep us from buying it.” Budgets are extremely useful if you’re looking to slash your spending and stock up on savings. But sometimes budgets can be hard to stick to. Here are some ways that you can break those rules and still live happily on a budget.
Rule: No Shopping at the Mall - A trip to your local mall can do a number on your budget. So why not head to the mall for a free shopping spree? Before you go plan your trip and research freebies that you can take advantage of. For instance, go on a Thursday and pick up a free gift at Aerie for being part of the A-List. Every month they give away a new item completely free. Once you’ve hit up Aerie, head to Victoria’s Secret. From now through November 15 they’ll give you a free Beauty Rush lip gloss when you go in for a free fitting. By now all this shopping may have gotten you thirsty so take this coupon to GNC for a free bottle of Protein Blitz. Throw in a free makeover at a department store make-up counter and you’ve rounded out a lovely and perfectly free trip to the mall.
Rule: No More Expensive Coffees - That caffeine addiction can make staying away from your local coffee shop incredibly difficult. Instead of buying a $4 latte, switch to the daily brew or a cup of tea. You can probably scrounge up enough change to pay for it in your car’s coin compartment, which is kind of like free money anyway!
Rule: No Eating at Restaurants - It’s true that dining out can eat up your budget pretty easily. But if you search for gift certificates at Restaurant.com before you go you’ll slash your bill significantly. Right now $25 gift certificates are just $2 through 10/31/2009 with coupon code TREAT. You could also vow to order water instead of alcohol and split a main course with your sweetie rather than taking home leftovers that may never get eaten.
Rule: No Expensive Entertainment - No money for entertainment? That doesn’t sound like much fun. Break this rule safely by looking for free stuff to do or by renting a movie instead of heading to the theater. And if you’re going to break this rule, make sure you always pay with cash. Racking up credit card debt to have a good time will suck the fun right out of it.
Rule: No Vacations Allowed - Budgets can take a big hit during vacations. Organize a day trip instead. Pack a lunch and enjoy some natural surroundings. You’ll feel like you got away without letting your spending get out of control.
