Now that the little ones are back in class, it’s time to start getting snack time back into the swing of things. It’s ok to encourage some healthy snacking in between meals, but sometimes store-bought snacks are expensive. Avoiding high-priced pre-packaged snacks can save you a lot of money. Here are five cheap after-school snacks—one for every day of the week-- to start the school year. (Pssst - Still need some more pencils & calculators? There are still plenty of coupons and deals to be had over at the Ben's Bargains Back To School Bargains page!

Monday Snack: Yogurt Parfait - Bananas are usually the cheapest fruit in the produce section. Pair that with flavored yogurt to create colorful layers for a yogurt and fruit parfait. Top with some granola for added protein. You can even add a spoonful of whipped cream to give the yogurt parfait more of a dessert feel.

Tuesday Snack: Indoor S’mores - Give them a summer flashback with an indoor S’more. It’s a super fast snack that only requires three ingredients: graham crackers, marshmallows, and either chocolate or peanut butter. Simply spread some peanut butter or layer some chocolate squares onto a graham cracker. Top with one layer of marshmallows and put in the oven with the broiler on for a minute or two, until the marshmallows are lightly browned. Yum!

Wednesday Snack: Apples and Fruit Dip - Blend up a cup of cottage cheese with one-fourth cup peanut butter and a dash of cinnamon for some tasty fruit dip. Slice up an apple and let the snacking begin!

Thursday Snack: Ants on a Log - Who doesn’t love this classic favorite? Plus it’s a great way to get your kids to eat celery, and what parent doesn’t love that? Simply slice up some celery stalks, spread with peanut butter and top with a line of ants—also known as raisins.

Friday Snack: Pita Pizza - Celebrate the end of the school week with a fun after-school snack that is a healthy and cheap version of pizza. Pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees. Then simply cover a slice of pita bread with a couple tablespoons of spaghetti sauce and top with veggies you have on hand like broccoli, onion or squash. Cover up the veggies with some shredded mozzarella. Cook for eight to ten minutes and your Friday after-school pizza party can begin!
