How to Score Free Groceries Every Week

Posted on 05/26/2009

It’s probably one of your favorite four letter words: free. If you’re a fan of paying nothing– you’re in luck. More and more, retailers are offering freebies in order to get customers in the door. Their hope is that you’ll be lured in by the free stuff, then shop around to spend more. But if you stick to your guns, you can get free groceries every week without paying more for stuff you don’t need. Here’s how.

Get the Sunday Paper
Think of the ads in the Sunday paper as your play book. It’s a treasure map to all the freebies. Start with the major drug store chains. Each week they give away free items like toothpaste, face wash, and razors. Find out which items are free, make a list and only get the free items.

Learn the Game
In order to get the most free stuff, you must learn to play the game. For instance, this week at Walgreens Bayer Quick Release Crystals are $2.49. But when you buy them you’ll receive $2.49 in Register Rewards. Register Rewards can be used almost like a Walgreens gift certificate on your next purchase. Let’s say you took that $2.49 in Register Rewards and used it to by Colgate Wave Total Toothpaste which costs $2.49. You’d get the toothpaste for free, plus another $1.50 in Register Rewards for buying the toothpaste. That means you would have spent $2.49 out of pocket, gone home with the Bayer and the toothpaste, plus $1.50 to spend during your next trip. At CVS, the game is similar but instead of Register Rewards, you receive Extra Care Bucks. It’s a good deal if you can learn how to play the game.

Clip Coupons
You’ll find that you’re able to get more free items if you clip coupons. Some products may cost a little, but with the right coupon they’ll be free, or better yet, you’ll actually make money by taking the item out of the store. It may sound too good to be true, but it’s not.

Combine Sales and Coupons
This week I walked away with free dog treats, steak sauce, salad dressing, and barbeque sauce from my local Publix grocery store. I did that by combining sales with coupons. Many grocery stores offer similar steals.

The sales change every week. Learn the stores’ schedules for when new discounts are advertised. That way, you can stock your pantry with free groceries and goods if you use your coupons with what’s on sale.
