How to be Romantic and Cheap

Posted on 02/04/2009

There are some words that just go together like French and manicure, caramel and macchiato, desperate and housewives. But what about romantic and cheap? Romance doesn’t have to mean five-star restaurants and expensive jewelry. Even the most frugal frugalites can be romantic. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, here are some tips to help you pull it off tastefully.

Wow your Valentine - or even just yourself - with the Bargainist Best Bets below.

Be Sneaky
Surprises make sweet gestures all the more romantic. Slip a little love note into your honey’s lunch bag or coat pocket. Hide a pair of your undies where your spouse may unexpectedly find them. Create a scavenger hunt and make yourself the prize at the end.

Be Sentimental
Every couple has songs that bring them back to their early days of dating. Burn a CD with a few of your romantic favorites. Find photos of the two of you and make a mini-scrapbook dedicated to your love. Recreate the meal you shared on your first date.

Be Creative
On Valentine’s Day, everybody does dinner and roses. Why else would the price for a dozen roses skyrocket? Supply and demand, people! Think of something different and you won’t come across as cheap– you’ll come across as creative.

Be Unique
One of the most romantic things a guy ever did for me cost about $2. He bought a jumbo bag of pixy sticks (one of my favorite candies) and inexpensive printer labels. On the labels he wrote something he loved about me and attached each one to a pixy stick. He then hid the candies everywhere– in my car, my purse, my apartment. I kept discovering them for days. I give you permission to steal that idea, or better yet, come up with your own unique one!

Be Indulgent
Don’t pay big bucks to let someone else rub your sweetie down in a dimly lit room– do it yourself! Draw a bubble bath, light some candles, and pick up a bottle of massage oil at the drug store. I think you can take it from there.

Be Open
There’s something particularly lovely about a public display of love. Tell the world how you feel about your special someone. Write it on the sidewalk with chalk, call in a dedication to a radio show, or put it on your Facebook status.
