Posted on 02/12/2009

Some people believe Valentine’s Day is a holiday purely created by greeting card companies and rose growers to capitalize on the sappy romantics of the world. I am not one of those people. But I am one of those people who likes to save money. If you are too, then keep reading for some discount Valentine’s date ideas that will spice up this special day without sucking your bank account dry.

Set a Limit
Before the big day arrives, make sure you and your honey talk about Valentine’s Day spending limits. There’s nothing romantic about fighting over money so make sure you keep the lines of communication open. Set a limit so no one will be disappointed when Cupid doesn’t bring any big flashy diamonds this year.

Discount Dinner
Look for local joints offering special prices on Valentine’s Day dinners. Some restaurants will be advertising fixed-price menus with hopes of beating out the competition. One to consider is McCormick and Schmicks. For just $29.95 a person you can be eating a steak and lobster three-course meal. Also, search through the restaurant listings at From now through February 15, you can save 60%, plus get a $15 FTD reward when you use the code TREAT at checkout.

Discount Spa Treatments
Go ahead, indulge your sweetheart with a massage. Try Massage Envy where first-timers only pay $39 for a one-hour rub down. Or if you’re lucky enough to live close to one of the nearly 50 Aveda Institutes, try booking a manicure, pedicure or facial. Don’t worry– the students are always under the close eye of qualified instructors.

Make Some Sweets
Since V-Day falls on a Saturday, why not spend the afternoon making sweets? Pick a couple of recipes and share the experience of creating something tasty in the kitchen. (We’re talking about chocolate cake or sugar cookies.) Then afterward you’ll each get to sample your yummy treats.

Romantic Movies
Rather than sit in a crowded movie theater, fork over one-fifth the cash and rent some romantic flicks. Need help on the selection? Check out Entertainment Weekly’s list of the 25 most romantic movies from the past 25 years. We’re so happy Say Anything made the list because what’s more romantic than blaring Peter Gabriel from a boom box? Nothing– absolutely nothing.
