How to Prepare Now for Black Friday

Posted on 11/13/2008

For football fans there’s the Super Bowl. For style mavens there’s Fashion Week. And for bargain shoppers, the moment to shine is Black Friday. Only novices would set their alarm clock on Thanksgiving night without a plan. Getting the best Black Friday deals doesn’t simply happen by chance. Here are some ways to step up your Black Friday game by planning ahead.

Read Forums
Websites like and maintain forums for shoppers. Black Friday forums are already popping up with ad scans, door busters and coupon alerts that retailers are planning. And The Bargainist will be posting many of these deals as well. This is a great way to get ahead of the competition and map out your Black Friday attack.

Recruit Friends and Family
Black Friday is especially fun when shared with like-minded friends or family members. Leave the naysayers at home. It takes a special person to get up that early and brave the crowds all for the rush of a bargain. But those that get it, get it.

Become a VIP
Best Buy is running a competition to become a Black Friday VIP. Winners receive a $1,000 gift card and early bird entry into 25 Best Buy stores around the country. On top of the money at the status you’ll get a limo ride to and from Best Buy on the morning after Thanksgiving, entry into the store 30 minutes before everyone else and the option to purchase up to four Black Friday door busters. Plus, winners receive a camcorder to document the experience. All you have to do is write a winning 250-word essay about what you do to make the day after Thanksgiving fun and special. The deadline for entry is November 18, 2008. Don’t forget to mention how The Bargainist helped you prepare for the big day!
