With a new school year comes a need for new school supplies, new clothes and new books. Getting kids ready for a new year of academic success can be expensive. Kick off the year with an “A” in back-to-school bargain hunting by following these tips.

Lunch Bags and Boxes
Every earth-friendly kid knows the importance of bringing their lunch in a reusable bag or lunch box. But what these youngsters may not know is that those lunch bags will be deeply discounted in just a few short weeks. Once school starts, demand for these items plummets so stores start slashing prices. If Junior can reuse a grocery bag for a few weeks, it’ll pay off.

School Supplies
Before hitting discount stores to stock up on everything on that long school supply list, try starting at home. Chances are you’ve got pencils, pens, a ruler, notebooks, folders and a whole bunch of other stuff already. It may not be shiny and new, but it’ll satisfy the teacher’s request.

Clothes
Every kid wants to start off school with cool new clothes. But let’s face it, in most places it’s still hot out. Summer clothes will be much more comfortable than a new sweater. Try quenching their need for new clothes by shopping sales like this one at Old Navy where dozens of items are up to 40% off.

Backpacks
Backpacks are a back-to-school must-have. This is another item that will be drastically reduced once school is back in session. But if you must purchase one now, check out Kmart where all backpacks are 40% off.

Sports Equipment
Extracurricular activities can mean an extra expense. Try to steer your student towards an activity that may require less financial commitment, like track or tennis. Stock up on a new pair of running shoes and you’re good to go. Another idea is to check out stores that sell used sporting goods like Play it Again Sports.
